- May involve direct or implied meanings and statement
- May be ambiguous 
- May call for a change in law or attitudes or seek to support a campaign
- May seek to promote or provide an alternative viewpoint
- Reflect the values, attitudes and beliefs of the artist
- Often may not focus solely on on the artists 
- Reflects the zeitgeist
- Lyrics of the song may not be directly political/protest related but the video interprets as such
